The famous Enetri Shelf, originally designed by Niels Gammelgaard in 1985 for IKEA, is an iconic and highly sought after piece of midcentury modern furniture. Having seen many examples across the internet over the years, I fell in love with its sleek form, but often costing upward of $1,000 for an original, I knew that I would have to make my own.

Here is my take on the Enetri Shelf, which I made of painted 3/4″ plywood panels for the shelves, and a twin set of welded 1″ steel square-tube frames connected with a cross brace. This cross brace, fixed to the frames via 4 simple bolts, allows the entire shelf to disassemble and pack flat upon removing these bolts in mere minutes for easy transport.

My take on the Enetri shelf features a slightly more industrial, rough finish and form than the original, but it is still heavily inspired by the original’s proportions and features.

It was a fun one to put together over the course of a few days, and I am looking forward to having it in my home!
